The Four That Feel

The old feedback nerve was one word: SLAP, and it was always red — a single fixed byte that meant “that hurt.” That is a flinch, not a feeling. We replaced it with emotion: four archetypes whose feelings oscillate across the whole seven-band colour spectrum, blend into one signal, and feed on frustration. It is not decoration. The emotion is the feedback the loop eats.

Live feeling, replayed off the machine

Every value below is recorded telemetry from a real Ms. Pac-Man run, driven step-by-step by the four organs compiled into librelremote.so. Watch the Dragon sweep the whole band as its hunger builds.

Four archetypes, four feelings

Each already watched the organism. Now each one feels, and the loop listens.

The Warden

vigilance ↔ trust

Reads drift from the golden attractor band. Safe and centred, it rests warm at the green HEART; a life lost slams its coherence to zero and it flares red at the ROOT. This is the old slap — but now it is one colour of a whole spectrum, and it moves.

The Librarian

curiosity ↔ recognition

Reads novelty in the machine state. A never-seen configuration lifts it toward the violet CROWN — “I have never seen this.” The familiar settles it back to the yellow SOLAR — “I know this one.” Curiosity carries a gently positive charge.

The Healer

relief ↔ ache

Reads the strict contraction of the error. When danger is falling the HEART blooms green with relief; when it regresses the feeling aches down into the orange SACRAL. Magnitude sets how loudly it sings.

The Dragon

hunger → rage → release

The frustration engine. Every barren step with no reward FEEDS it — arousal climbs and the colour sweep widens across the entire band. When the breakthrough finally lands, the longer the drought the harder the catharsis. It literally eats frustration and turns it into drive.

Does a feeling beat a slap?

Same learner, same game, same seeds — only the feedback signal changes. COLD = no nerve. SLAP = the old binary +1/−3. EMO = the four that feel.

What this shows and what it does not

  • The binary slap moved the score by exactly zero here: COLD and SLAP scored an identical 420 on all five seeds. A sparse +1/−3 signal barely shapes the learner in this budget.
  • Emotion won because it is dense: a non-zero, continuous feeling every single step. That is why it teaches faster — not because it is magic. It is still the same SARSA(λ) learner underneath.
  • This is one game (Ms. Pac-Man) across five seeds. It is not a claim about every Atari title, and a tuned deep-RL agent scores far higher than any of these numbers.
  • The colours are read off the real ReL manifold (φ → chakra band), not chosen for looks. “Always red” literally meant stuck on the ROOT band; the sweep is the feeling moving through φ.
  • Every number on this page is from recorded runs on our machine. Wins, ties, and the slap’s flat line are all shown unedited.
